Guncast Builds Swimming Pool for Jupiter Artland Sculpture Project

Guncast is pleased to be behind the construction of the Jupiter Artland’s latest permanent commission, Gateway, by Portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelos, taking the form of a vibrant swimming pool pressed into the landscape.

The nine-meter round pool was constructed by Guncast in the centre of Joana’s psychedelic design set within in an enclosed formal garden designed by Jupiter’s Keeper of the Landscape Thomas Unterdorfer alongside Jupiter’s creative powerhouse Nicky Wilson. The garden, which uses evergreen plants and topiary, enhances the swathes of primary colours of the swimming pool design. Visually, Gateway depicts Joana Vasconcelos’s drawing of her own astrological chart. The design also draws upon a ley line which runs through Jupiter Artland, which links several historically significant sites around the world, including the mystical ‘centre of Scotland’ Mount Schiehallion in the Highlands.

Now the project is complete, visitors had the opportunity to swim in the fully functioning pool which incorporates Guncast’s usual high specification filtration, disinfection and water treatment systems, at set times – The swimming pool will be open for public viewing and will be used for specific events.

The sculpture park itself, situated near Edinburgh Airport, was shortlisted for Britain’s Museum of the year in 2016 and boasts more than 300,000 visitors through its doors since opening.
