Guncast builds impressive swimming pool for prep school in Kent

Guncast has designed and built an impressive indoor swimming pool for Rose Hill Prep School in Royal Tunbridge Wells, Kent. The new pool has proven a brilliant addition to the school’s sporting facilities.

Indoor school swimming pool brief

The original brief was to refurbish the existing 40-year-old outdoor school pool and envelop it into a new building. However, after thorough inspection, it quickly became clear that the existing pool did not provide suitable structural integrity for constructing the new building. Therefore, it was decided to remove the old shell and opt for a new installation.

“The school had an existing outdoor pool dating back to the 1970’s,” says Richard Harris, Senior Design Manager for Guncast. “It is quite typical of school pools of that time with a basic filtration plant similar to what you would expect in a domestic application.”

Contemporary pool finishes

“The pool complements the new building’s minimalist theme,” explains Richard. “It is finished throughout with clean-cut glass mosaic tiles that create a stunning contrast with the porcelain surround.”

A mix of natural light and uncomplicated textures provide a calm, comfortable and efficient environment for children and clubs alike. The new school pool measures 15 metres by 6 metres. The shallow end of the indoor pool reaches 0.9 metres, allowing even the youngest pupils of the school to enjoy and partake in lessons. The deep end stands at 1.8 metres, catering for a wide range of swimming abilities.

Modern swimming pool filtration systems

The pool water treatment is a fully automatic UV system with vertical sand filtration allowing minimal residual chemical use and a pleasant atmosphere.

“The twin pump and filter combination provides maximum filtration and enables school staff to easily carry out regular maintenance,” says Richard, explaining that Guncast’s services also included air handling and ductwork.

The specialist team at Guncast designed and built the pool within the required timeframe and budget, with work beginning in spring 2017 and finishing early the following year.

Why Guncast?

Guncast was recommended to help facilitate the complete pool works by the main construction contractor for its expertise and skills and was able to start in time to fit with the overall build timelines. The works also had to be sensitive to the exam timetable and working within a school environment.
