Planning an Outdoor Pool for Your Home: What to Look for in a Swimming Pool Design and Build Expert

An outdoor swimming pool can add so much to your home, whether it will be used for exercise, entertaining, or just some relaxation and family leisure time.  It can also be an asset if you plan to sell your home in the future. Like any home or garden improvement project, an outdoor swimming pool installation requires management to avoid costly mistakes and delays.

Find a partner that is familiar with swimming pool building regulations

Undertaking a high-end property improvement demands rigorous research and legal compliance. Local building regulations dictate numerous aspects of property development. This is particularly important when dealing with listed buildings or protected landscapes, where strict rules govern what can and cannot be altered.

Engaging a builder with decades of expertise ensures that all legal and structural parameters are respected. Experienced specialists navigate these regulatory complexities effortlessly. They know how to protect the architectural integrity of a historic estate while avoiding costly regulatory mistakes that could pause or derail the entire build.

Ask whether your swimming pool designer will work with your landscape designer

You may have a clear idea of the type of outdoor swimming pool you want, but have you considered how it will fit in with the entire landscaped garden? Whatever style of swimming pool you choose, it should complement its surroundings, by standing out or blending in.

To get this right involves a swimming pool designer working closely with a landscape designer to ensure that the entire outdoor space is cohesive, beautiful, and in turn complements the building. This should be addressed at the swimming pool design consultancy stage. The Guncast design team works together with landscape designers, as well as interior designers, and architects, to ensure that every swimming pool meets the brief and complements its surroundings.

Ask about their swimming pool build method and experience

The management of the pool build itself, is a critical part of the process to ensure that the pool is skilfully crafted and finished to perfection, and according to the original design. Look for a swimming pool builder with decades of experience and high-quality standards and processes.

Check whether they will use a tried and tested swimming pool construction method, such as the gunite wet or dry sprayed concrete technique. This will give you peace of mind that the construction of your swimming pool will be high quality and long-lasting.

Ask what swimming pool finish they offer

Do they provide swimming pool maintenance?

Routine maintenance (preferably by the same engineer) is essential to the longevity and operational performance of your swimming pool. Find out if they have a dedicated swimming pool service and maintenance team, including trained divers for underwater maintenance, if required. Ask about an ongoing service and maintenance package to keep your swimming pool running all year round.

Planning an Outdoor Pool Project? Here’s What You Need to Consider

Thorough preparation is the key to a flawless execution. Trusted advice from industry experts makes the entire planning process significantly easier for everyone involved. Here are a few of the critical elements that require your attention before ground is broken.

Location, Location, Location

It’s important to bear in mind that a premium outdoor pool is much more than just a place to swim. This is a bespoke area for entertainment, relaxation and leisure, a space for memories to be made for years to come.

It’s a good idea to position the pool in a well-lit, accessible location, preferably the sunniest spot and sheltered from the wind. With careful swimming pool design, a luxury pool can become the heart of a home, embellishing the landscape and creating a unique selling point that boosts property value.

Concrete Spraying Methods

Choosing the right construction method for your project can impact the overall finish and integration of the pool into the wider build scheme. The preferred choice is the gunite wet or dry sprayed concrete technique, which is widely used for the construction of high quality, elite swimming pools. Speak with our specialists today for advice.

Choosing the Right Finishes

Is the pool theme going to be atmospheric and modern, or traditional and bright? The surrounding structures and finishes are just as important as the pool itself. One factor that will leave a lasting impression is the swimming pool tiling.

Large format porcelain tiles are an excellent choice where the look of natural stone is desired, without the usual drawbacks that natural stone encounters in a pool environment.

Mosaic tiles are versatile for creating stylish pattern-work and, since Roman times, have been used to create opulent decoration. Dark coloured mosaic tiles are often used to create a dramatic, reflective effect and combined with a dark grout, the pool’s finish becomes seamless, elegant and sleek.

Guncast imports the finest mosaic tiles from around the world to achieve beautiful, durable pools and offers an exclusively designed range of marble featuring the latest in on-trend colours including Slate Green, Anthracite Grey, and Bottle Green.

Before You Begin: Understanding Key Considerations for the swimming pool construction

Every successful project starts with understanding your goals and the practical requirements of your site. Before construction begins, Guncast works closely with homeowners and, where applicable, their architects to ensure the pool integrates seamlessly into the overall vision for the property. Early collaboration with architects helps align landscaping, structural considerations, plant room locations and the wider aesthetic of the outdoor environment,; whether the project is residential or commercial.

Design intent for the swimming pool

Your vision shapes the pool. Whether you want a space for fitness, relaxation, children, entertaining or all of these, your intended use influences depth, circulation, lighting, steps, heating choices and finishes. At this stage, we also explore whether you’re envisioning an infinity pool, a plunge pool, or a family friendly design. This is a key moment in the swimming pool design journey.

Site feasibility

We assess ground conditions, drainage, and the access routes needed for excavation machinery. We also consider how the pool will sit within the landscape and whether soil will be redistributed or removed. These early site visits ensure your pool is engineered correctly and help us ensure your pool performs efficiently for years to come.

Swimming pool build project timeline

Although each project is unique, it is important to understand that high-quality swimming pool construction involves multiple technical stages. These unfold across several weeks and are supported by specialist teams with decades of experience in complex swimming pool projects.

garden pool excavation

Outdoor Swimming Pool Construction Stages

Stage One: Excavation and Early Groundworks

Once the design and location are confirmed, excavation begins. This is the first major onsite stage and typically takes three to four weeks depending on ground conditions and the size of the pool. When excavation is complete, there is usually a substantial amount of soil on site. Some clients reuse this within their garden design, while others prefer to have it removed.

With the hole prepared, we move on to forming the foundations of the structure. This includes shuttering, pipework and steel reinforcement, critical elements in all design and construction projects. These create the framework that supports the shape and strength of the final pool, whether indoor, outdoor or indoor–outdoor.

Stage Two: Insulated Shuttering and Reinforcement

At Guncast, we always insulate the shell of an outdoor pool. This is not an industry standard approach, but it is one we commit to because it improves thermal performance and reduces heat loss into the ground, making the pool more energy efficient. Insulation also reduces waste because we avoid using disposable timber shuttering.

During this stage, we also install the primary pipework and all steel reinforcement required to meet structural engineering standards. This is an important milestone because once complete, the swimming pool shell is ready for the concrete spraying process.

Watch how we prepare every pool shell with insulated shuttering and precision‑placed pipework for long‑term performance.

Stage Three: Shotcrete Application to Form the Pool Shell

Once the structure is prepared, the Shotcrete team steps in. This is one of the most dramatic and technical phases of the project. Shotcrete is pneumatically projected concrete that is sprayed at high velocity onto the reinforced shutter. This forces the concrete to compact on impact and creates a dense and highly durable monolithic structure.

Shotcrete eliminates cold joints within the shell. Because the entire structure cures as a single mass, it results in a stronger and longer lasting pool compared to many traditional building methods. This stage is fast paced on site with concrete mixer trucks arriving, pumps running and a skilled team working together. Although it looks intense, most shells are completed within a week. Once sprayed, the shell is left to cure before we move into the next technical stages.

Stage Four: Rendering, Waterproofing and Tiling

After curing, we prepare the shell for finishing. This involves a precise rendering process followed by specialist waterproofing systems. Waterproofing is an essential step because it protects the structure and provides a consistent surface for tiling.

Tiling is where the pool begins to take on its visual character. Whether the design calls for porcelain, natural stone, mosaic or glass finishes, every tile is laid with precision. Attention to detail at this stage defines the final look and contributes significantly to the overall luxury of the pool.

Stage Five: Engineering, Water Systems and Plant Room Installation

A luxury pool depends on high performance water systems that operate quietly, efficiently and reliably. The plant room is the technical heart of the pool and is designed to house:

• Filtration and circulation systems
• Pumps and automated controls
• Heating systems including heat pumps or boiler integration
• Advanced water treatment equipment, such as Ozone systems or AMF (Activated Filter Media) for exceptional water clarity and reduced chemical reliance

At Guncast, our engineering approach ensures the pool water is consistently clear and comfortable while operating at optimum efficiency. These systems are designed around your pool’s size, use case and environmental considerations to provide a dependable and enjoyable swimming experience.

Stage Six: Commissioning and Handover

Once all systems are installed, we thoroughly test and commission the pool. This includes water balancing, equipment testing, heating calibration and full system checks. When everything is operating perfectly, we guide you through how your pool works and how to get the best long term performance from it.

At this stage, your pool is ready for use and the transformation of your outdoor space is complete.

FAQs

How long does an outdoor pool project take?

Most traditional outdoor pool builds start from around 16 weeks, depending on design complexity, ground conditions, weather and access.

Guncast projects, which involve insulation, reinforced shuttering, deep‑set pipework and precision engineering, typically sit toward the higher end of this range for quality and longevity.

When is the best time to start an outdoor pool project?

The best time depends on your priorities:

  •  Late autumn or winter allows the full build to be completed off‑season, meaning the pool is ready to enjoy by summer, however, winter can introduce challenges such as weather‑related delays.
  • Spring offers milder conditions and good ground stability, but demand is higher and schedules may be busier.
  • Summer provides ideal construction weather but is peak season, so expect higher demand and longer lead times.
Is all the soil removed after excavation?

You may resuse the soil for landscaping, or have it removed from site. This will be planned into the project.

What factors affect build time of an outdoor pool?

Key factors influencing the project timeframe include:

  • Pool complexity and size
  • Weather conditions such as rainfall and frost which can delay excavation and concrete curing
  • Accessibility factors including permits, ground access and soil conditions
