Update on Falkland Islands’ Swimming Pool Project

Update on Falkland Islands’ Swimming Pool Project

Back in October 2020, we announced an exciting new project – the Falkland Islands Stanley Leisure Centre Swimming Pool. The venue, which had been closed for over a year is now back on track to being refurbished and as of February 2021, tiling had begun.

In July 2020, the Stanley Pool refurbishment contract was awarded to Guncast, during the global COVID-19 pandemic. The Guncast team has worked through the difficult times of lockdown and quarantines and now, at time of writing, the pool is expected to reopen in a matter of weeks.

Swimming Pool Restoration and Repair

When the existing fibreglass was lifted, it was clear that most of the tiles were either broken or loose. The screed, which was water damaged, also needed to be removed, and a brand-new pool base has been laid out. There has also been upgrades in the plant room to make it fit for purpose and provide long-term use by the residents.

Education and Community portfolio holder, MLA Stacy Bragger said: “The swimming pool is a vital part of our community and I would like to thank the public for being so patient. A lot is happening to plan and deliver these retiling works, and other remedial works are also taking place at present to improve the pool condition and other aspects of the swimming pool complex. I am sure we are all looking forward to the planned re-opening in May 2021.”
