Back in July 2020, the contract for refurbishing the Stanley Leisure Centre swimming pool on the Falkland Islands was awarded to Guncast Swimming Pools Ltd. The Falkland Islands have just two swimming pools available to the public – one in Mount Pleasant and one in Stanley. Owing to disrepair, the Stanley pool had been closed for well over a year before Guncast was granted the opportunity to utilise its expert knowledge in swimming pool refurbishment and restoration, to give the residents of the Falkland Islands the public swimming facility they deserve.

The Guncast team got to work by assessing the pool’s condition and determining the extensive actions required to restore the swimming pool to its former glory. When the existing fibreglass of the pool was lifted, it became clear that a vast majority of the tiles were in various states of disrepair and would need replacing. The screed (the surface at the bottom of the swimming pool), was water damaged and needed to be removed. It was deemed necessary to lay out a brand-new pool base in its entirety.

Upgrades were also made in the swimming pool plant room to make it fit for purpose and provide long-term use by the residents. Guncast worked tirelessly alongside the community to ensure their needs and desires were met, all the while keeping in mind the importance of safety and functionality in a public swimming facility.

MLA Barry Elsby, Portfolio Lead for Development and Commercial Services, said at the time: “This has been a hugely important project for the government, given the significance of the pool to our local community. The team involved were tested throughout the programme of works and, with the added restrictions that Covid-19 brought, everyone worked incredibly hard to ensure that this project came in on time and was delivered to a high standard.”.

The pool reopened on May 31^st 2021, and Guncast was thrilled to see an overwhelmingly positive response from the residents of the Falkland Islands. The impact of this project reminded the team that swimming pools are more than a luxury item – they can also bring people together.
